I do agree with your overall assessment of JT.

Gang War was just silly. There is another album released like this as well, although i can't recall it at the moment. While most people will find the performance too sloppy and JT too drunk to play at his best (or even fair), it is a chapter of his career....maybe even a very large chapter. Those albums might just be for the hardiest of his fans. I really dig him but don't suggest those albums to anybody that is just discovering him.

I do appreciate those messy live albums though. They are good in their own rite, one may argue. Most live albums are polished and the songs are cherry picked from concert to concert. I like that JT (or those that were responsible for realeasing the live performances) just put it out there anyways. I mean, this is what he was like many many times when he performed. In a way, this is a typical JT concert that one will listen to. It's the real thing. It makes getting other live recordings you may like better even sweeter (as with all other bootlegs or live recordings).

Other live performances by him are great, I think. "Sticks and Stones" and "Live at Mothers" are both pretty good. He had a fair range of styles he could visit. Some slow, fast, boogie woogie, etc....

My favorite song by him, Pirate Love, is best heard live (IMO).

overall, I think his stuff is pretty underrated. He is one of the few musicians that if I can make someone listen to some of his stuff, they walk away liking him. All of his performances are unpretentious and just sound like good rock n roll. I'm always hungry to hear more of his stuff and wonder what he'd be jamming like today.
