One of the best things to come out of 2020 has been the mass adoption of new pets while people are home. Some shelters even ran out of animals, which is incredible! Many shelters employed some really fun adoption tactics to help highlight their furry friends who were ready for adoption.
If you're tired of making the same crafts while you're home, or if you just really want a good cloche to help keep outdoor candles lit while you enjoy the outdoors this fall and winter, this craft is for you. I was so impressed with how simple yet effective it was and can't wait to make more of them for our outdoor dining this winter. It will be a welcome way to update our evenings at home.
While we all know that the world's largest polluters boil down to a few very wasteful companies, we can all also help do our part to cut down on waste. Canada is taking a step in the right direction and joining other countries who've already banned single-use plastic bags, which kill wildlife and clutter the environment every year. The ban is expected to be fully enacted by the end of next year. Let's join them!
One of my favorite things about the Internet is all of the fun fanart, whether it's fanfiction, reimagining actors to play characters, or even recreating animated characters (the zombie Disney princesses are still my favorite!). Now people are reimagining various movie posters and they are so fun to look at.
Lately I've been seeing a lot of public school parents flocking to our homeschool groups, looking for a quick fix for poor kids who are bored, listless and not learning much while they're attached to a computer all day long. Everyone is trying to do their best with what we've got and it's difficult for each person, parent to teacher to learner.
It's no secret that I love turtles, so when I saw this adorable albino Indian flapshell turtle I practically squealed. It looks nothing like any other turtle I've ever seen before. In fact, it looks like melted American cheese!
A farmer in India found this cutie and shared it with the world, and if you saw a photo of a regular flapshell turtle you wouldn't even bat an eye. They are very common and wouldn't startle anyone. This one is incredibly unique!
Interactive cat toys are wonderful tools to use in keeping your cat healthy, curious and engaged. They are great for cats who tend to overeat and toss their cookies, too! There are so many to choose from that it can be difficult to make a selection, but this list of 13 toys is a great place to begin.
A Grateful Dead themed brewery has opened up near Denver and it's a groovy sight to behold. I haven't been yet but the photos alone make me think it would be my kind of place. The vibrant art and chill vibe make me want to visit as soon as it's safe to do so again.
With the holidays upon us, it's time to think about what to get the little cooks in our lives. I know so many kids who love to cook, and my own teen is in a baking class right now that's extra fun. It's virtual through our co-op and the mother has kept it super casual to help the kids relax and just enjoy baking together. I know another family that bought a cooking club subscription with recipes and tools delivered monthly, which would make a great gift, too.
Have you read Leslé Honoré’'s beautiful poem "Brown Girl, Brown Girl" yet? When she heard the news of Kamala Harris becoming the next Vice President of the United States, she had to hurry and get the words down on her notes app. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I'm glad she didn't forget them.
At this stage in 2020 I'm all about comfort reading. I didn't read even half of my October reads and went straight into comedic romance, which is usually what I read from December through January. In some ways this has been a great stress reliever, but in others it has been a bit disappointing.
Every week we try to find fun new games to play in quarantine, but have you ever just played the goofy little games that platforms offer instead? This is incredibly fun to do, especially with people who've never experiences them before.
Who wasn't thrilled to see Dan Levy listed as one of the sexiest men of the year? Dubbed the "Sexiest Man in Quarantine," the Schitt's Creek co-creator and actor has certainly had his share of successes in this odd year. It's incredible to see how far he's come since his MTV days and I'm so appreciative of the joy and laughter he's brought to my family while under quarantine. He deserves every accolade.
If you're the kind of person who feels guilty about buying a takeout meal on Thanksgiving like me (I hate when workers have to work holidays, but I know many like to make the extra money), this is the perfect year to order curbside without the guilt. You're only eating with your household, so why get a whole bird? It's also going to help support local restaurants that are struggling right now. So by all means, go for the curbside this year!
Brownies, amirite? I could eat them for days (which means I honestly couldn't, or I'd get sick, but you know what I mean!). I remember the first time I realized not all brownies were just made of chocolate. My aunt drizzled raspberry jam in the brownies she'd made for the holidays and I have been hooked on brownie variations ever since!
There really isn't anything that's not made better with the addition of Sam Elliott. Mask? Political ads? Golden Compass? Parks and Recreation? "Won't Back Down"? All things enhanced by Sam Elliott's slow drawl and majestic presence.
Elliott is playing a character named Wild Wild West, the new mayor of Quahog and brother to Adam West's previous character, and I think it's the most exciting thing to happen on the show in a while. I can't wait to see what he brings to the show!
Whether it's a favorite hobby or a comforting activity taken on in recent months to cope with being homebound, gardening is a big part of many people's lives these days, and getting kids hooked early on through nature studies is a great way to spark their interests. Nature studies can be as simple as logging observations in a notebook, but you could always create a cool nature study gift for the young person in your life to send to them this holiday season.
It's so frustrating to watch humans refuse to social distance, wear masks and make tiny sacrifices to protect one another, which makes it difficult for some to believe that we're still evolving. It makes perfect sense for any species still on this planet to continue to do so as long as they exist, however, and the human evolution of a particular artery is one example.
There are peanut butter smoothies and shakes, so I suppose it should have come as no surprise that people make peanut butter cocktails as well. There are even liquors sold with peanut butter flavor in them. As much as I love peanut butter, I've never been one for it in ice cream or drinks, and I have to wonder if it's worth trying as a cocktail when I know I probably won't like it.
